Dyslexia can be very different to different people. You touched on several characteristics of Dyslexia. The fact is 1 in 5 people have some level of Dyslexia. They can range from very mild to severe. The chance you have Dyslexia is high. You notice difficulty in places where you know yourself to be out of place with your normal to high intelligence. Unfortunately the schools are not equipped to give a Dyslexia diagnosis. Schools don’t have that diagnostic capability. They can diagnose delays and areas of weakness sometimes that can get you some services and accommodations. I am not too confident they will be cooperative given that you are doing well in school unfortunately. I would focus on your areas of trouble. You could get tested on your own, but that would entail your parents cooperation and it is a little costly to be tested. It would identify your areas of weakness and they could then give suggestions to the school for accommodations for you such as being able to have books read to you through devices if comprehension is an issue, or more time on tests, or someone to take notes for you…etc. The person who does the testing should be a Doctor of some sort. Don’t make the mistake I made with my son. I had him tested at a Dyslexia clinic. It was an extensive evaluation and cost $1500. The school did not accept the evaluation because the person who tested him was not a doctor. You could do private Dyslexia tutoring yourself. They go over lots of ways to spell words, work on comprehension or memory. You could also do your own learning at home. The Dyslexia clinic I went to did tutoring with or without a formal diagnosis. You don’t have to get tested to get help. Check out the website http://www.brightsolutions.us
It will answer every question you have and give you the resources you might need. If you don’t see what you need or have a question you can email the woman Susan Barton who runs the website. She is great. She travels all around the country giving lectures and campaigning for Dyslexia change in schools. A great book is “Overcoming dyslexia”
Unfortunately there are a lot of misconceptions about Dyslexia, so you might not get the support from other people that you need. You could show your mom the videos on the website and the checklists. That might help to educate her and to take you seriously.
My dream is to someday have all schools test children in Kindergarten for Dyslexia and get them services from the start so they don’t have to fail and fall behind at all.
Some states (a few) have already adopted this program with big success.
I wish you the best of luck!
Lots of people don’t understand that a person can be gifted AND have a learning disabiltiy at the same time. I know a LOT of them thru support groups on the internet.
Teachers don’t wnat to say anything if they notice your problems because schools are notorious for ignoring these problems so they can get out of helping. If I am not telling the truth, they would help.
The only way to get help in schools is that you have to qualify and get special education services. In UK this is called SEN.
If you are in the top set, it can’t be affecting you too much. But you need to talk to a teacher and ask for an assessment if you are really worried.
By your description you really don’t seem dyslexic, I think you should ask your teachers about taking a dyslexia assessment if you’re really that worried.
its not the worst thing and you say its only moderate dont focus on the problem
Your post has better spelling than at least 90% of the posts I’ve read on here over the years.
I have the same problem.. My maths is poor, spelling too also my writeing and reading is not good neather and my college hasnt picked it up..
Does your school have a conseller or someone you can talk to if you have a problem see if you ca speek to someone there.
My friend is dysexia and got better than me in her GCSE’s. Dyselxia does not mean your dumb or thick or anything. so you can be in the top groups at school and still be dylexsic.
Say to your teacher that you are worried about it, and see what they say. your mum may not belive you, as the same as my mum and dad don’t beivie me.
I hope you do get this sorted out, as it’s not nice not knowing, as you could be getting the extra help you may need.
